Lorraine Crewe - learndirect

Lorraine Crewe

Lorraine Crewe, aged 42, had not been in education for nearly 20 years before starting her learndirect programme. Lorraine's determination to achieve something for herself and gain a better understanding of key skills helped her decide to get back into learning. Lorraine has already completed her level 2 English GCSE equivalent Grade A-C and has been so pleased with the learndirect experience and available courses that she's just commenced a level 1 Maths programme which will lead to another GCSE equivalent qualification.  The flexibility of the whole learndirect experience has enabled Lorraine to study whilst also being a carer for her father, using the centres as and when time permitting.

Despite her success, Lorraine was originally worried that she wouldn't be able to complete the course and consequently disappointing her friends and family. However, as the program was well prepared and provided the ability to review any aspects she was unsure of, Lorraine has been able to achieve the best part of her learning experience; gaining her English qualification. Whilst studying at the learndirect centre this has provided her with a relaxing atmosphere with helpful staff and tutors on hand to give support and guidance throughout.

Working together with learndirect has been a huge realisation for Lorraine; she has found the motivation and the determination to undertake further courses, which she would never have thought of doing before. Lorraine revealed ‘I feel like I've achieve a critical part of my life. Before I felt useless, no motivation and really nothing to look forward to. But now I feel the sense of achievement gaining a level 2 in English and now completing a Maths programme.'

Darren Lake, learndirect Tutor.

Lorraine has worked extremely hard over the past few months and despite being a carer for her father has still found the time and determination to achieve her Literacy level two national test pass. Lorraine is conscientious, enthusiastic, always willing to learn and it's a real pleasure to be able to offer my support and guidance throughout her learning. Lorraine's confidence is very visible now and I've no doubt she will achieve her next goal: Numeracy level one'.

Jignesh Vaidya -learndirect

Jignesh Vaidya learndirectJignesh moved from India to the UK in 1992 to explore other opportunities and build upon his previous education.  Despite completing other courses in word processing, numeracy and sports studies Jignesh felt he wanted to further his education and prove to himself that he could fulfil other goals. Jignesh was recommended to learndirect by a friend but initially had some concerns about fitting his learning around his other responsibilities. Having spoken to a tutor at Skills for Enterprise Jignesh was instantly impressed with the method of learning and support on offer as this gave him the perfect opportunity to plan his learning around a busy life style and hectic work schedule.

Jignesh's currently completes the majority of his learning at home or work, in his own time and speed. If he needs a little extra help or support, he contacts the learndirect team through e-mail or arranges a visit to the learndirect centre for one-to-one sessions with his tutor.

Jignesh has already completed several learndirect courses gaining his GCSE English equivalent level one and is currently working towards numeracy level one. Since commencing his learndirect programme work colleagues have noticed vast improvements within his grammar and communication which has helped him gain confidence to develop his current role. Although he isn't stopping there, Jignesh plans to undertake courses in communications to improve both verbal and written elements which will benefit him not only at work but socially as well. In the future, Jignesh hopes to be a radio presenter for the BBC and the learndirect courses are helping him to reach this goal one step at a time.

Despite being disabled, Jignesh has never let this hinder his determination to achieve his goals. Working two jobs, one at BBC Radio Leicester and one at Employment Opportunities Jignesh still finds the time to play wheelchair basketball for the Leicester Cobras.

‘During my time supporting Jignesh I have been very impressed with his aptitude and am amazed how he manages to juggle his learning alongside two jobs and a very active social life. Jignesh has progressed very well, and having already achieved his literacy qualification I've no doubt the same award will be gained as his currently continues with his numeracy programme'

Elizabeth Bird - ILM

Lizzie Bird ILM case studyLizzie works as a Trainee Medical Physicist in Radiation Protection for the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. Her background was purely scientific and so to develop her role and become a registered clinical scientist, she needed to demonstrate a competency in management. To achieve this, Lizzie thought an introductory course would best suit her needs and give her the confidence to carry out her role and so undertook the ILM Level 3 Award in First Line Management with Skills for Enterprise.

Lizzie completed the programme using a range of supported online learning modules and 1 to 1 assessment support, Lizzie said she enjoyed completing ‘the course at a time that suited her rather than having to commit to attending regular sessions'. The flexibility and freedom gave her the ability to complete the course around her work. Although Lizzie initially had concerns about writing the assessment assignments, she was able to overcome this with support from her tutors and assessors.

One key aspect that has greatly benefited Lizzie is the ability to apply her learning to her work. She particularly found the Health and Safety unit very interesting and enjoyable as it related directly to her job. During her learning, Lizzie ‘found both David Ryan and Jo Kehoe very helpful throughout the course' enabling Skills for Enterprise together with the ILM, to meet her requirements.

Since commencing her studies, Lizzie's confidence has grown and she has implemented a new Problem Solving exercise which has been extended to other Sections. Achievement of the qualification has had a huge impact on her career and will greatly benefit her development in the future and she would definitely complete another course if it met her needs. Lizzie has been really pleased with her experience and has already started recommending people to ILM courses to help others develop their potential.

David Ryan, Skills Development Director said, Lizzie has been a fantastic student to support and has achieved excellent grades in the assignments submitted.  We wish Lizzie all the best with her career development and hope to see her back again sometime soon.
